    My recent consulting externship at PwC with Paragon One honed my research, analysis, and problem-solving skills within my personal "what, why, how" framework, which involved identifying the situation, understanding its significance, and analyzing its root causes. This approach, coupled with creative thinking and problem-solving skills, allowed me to tackle complex challenges and deliver valuable insights to our wonderful client.But the most valuable lesson? Daily goals and habits fuel long-term success. While this experience equipped me with valuable skills in research, analysis, and creative problem solving, a key takeaway was the importance of consistent action towards long-term goals. It's easy to set ambitious aspirations, but I learned that daily routines and following through on commitments are the true fuel for success.This realization has been a game-changer for me, and I encourage you, fellow externs and interns, to embrace the power of daily habits as you embark on your own professional journeys.     Already Halfway Through My RSM InternshipIt was just five weeks ago that I was boarding the plane to go to my intern orientation for RSM US LLP. Just looking at the schedule, I didn’t know what to expect and I have to admit I was anxious. That first week was a flood of information that left me eager to get into the office and get to auditing.Now, half of the internship has passed, and it feels like no time at all. Here are three reasons this has been a great experience for me:1.The friendly workforce – Whether it’s grabbing coffee before work or going to lunch with the whole engagement team, the willingness of people to share their personal time has completely welcomed me.2.Answers all around – I’ve had so many questions and they’ve all been answered. Most of the time the answer comes quickly, but sometimes it is, “Let me show you where to find that,” or “I don’t know, but I’ll find out”. This is so encouraging and is helping me learn so much.3.Meaningful tasks – Even the more basic items I’ve completed are part of a bigger picture. Every task has been intentional and makes me feel like I’m really contributing.Those reasons have been really important to me.     Today, I'm excited to welcome our new interns in Consulting at RSM. With my long history in higher education, this group holds a special place in my heart. As leaders, we sometimes find it challenging to maximize our time with emerging professionals. Here are some key tips I've shared with managers over the years:- **Set aside dedicated time weekly for questions**: This designated time allows both parties to focus. Provide clarity on when they should seek immediate guidance versus waiting for scheduled discussions.- **Embrace curiosity**: Encourage interns to explore by introducing them to key individuals, involving them in case studies, and inviting them to attend meetings. Use your one-on-one sessions for reflection and to help them process their experiences.- **Offer meaningful tasks**: Interns are eager to gain insights into their potential careers. Provide them with substantial responsibilities akin to those of new hires. Pair them with a junior colleague who can act as a mentor, fostering a new connection within the team.Let's celebrate this chance to nurture the next generation of professionals as they prepare to join the workforce.     The first day of Internship Experience UK 2024 was an exciting start. James Uffindell, CEO of Bright Network, kicked off the event by highlighting the company’s impressive growth and encouraging us to think big. The internship, hosted by Philip Yarrow, Careers and Community Manager at Bright Network, promises to be an incredible experience.Key takeaways from the first keynote talks included insights from Ajay Kabra at PwC UK, who emphasised the importance of authenticity and viewing challenges as growth opportunities. His key advice was, "Be yourself because everyone else is taken." Joao Martins, Early Careers Advisor at Deloitte, shared five key skills for effective leadership: clear and compassionate communication, prioritising tasks using the Eisenhower matrix, taking initiative by seeking feedback and thinking creatively, problem-solving by identifying challenges and generating solutions, and empowering teams by valuing diverse perspectives and building trust.A task from Deloitte, titled "The Journey to Leadership: Building Blocks for Emerging Leaders," allowed us to envision ourselves in leadership roles and plan projects under time constraints.     Though this update comes considerably late, I have opted to still share it, now having had time to reflect on the experience.On the 1st of July, I commenced a 3 week Internship at the esteemed consulting firm Kearney, along with 5 other incredibly perceptive interns. The stated goal of the programme was to provide participants with a first-hand view of the consulting world and the skills it takes to thrive within it. Now I could tell you of the numerous software packages we learnt to use during the time. I could tell you of the consulting-specific skillsets we obtained (such as storylining and how to set up a proposal). I could speak of the many poignant lessons we learnt from our engagements with the full-time staff of the firm. And all of it would be true.But the greatest triumph of this internship was not just in what it taught me about consulting, but what it taught me about myself.During the internship I was forced to contend with uncertainty; as is often the case when presented with a problem that doesn't have just one correct answer. I had to consider my ability to perform as part of a collective, one that often had various views on how to achieve the goal. I had to navigate the corporate environment and the intricacies it entails. I learnt about my interpersonal strengths and weaknesses and the importance of being coachable. I had to confront the balance between confidence and humility; being able to demonstrate intelligence/competence while still acknowledging that there is still more to learn. Finally, I had to learn the importance of EQ in a culture-driven firm such as this one.And in all the aforementioned ways, I am a better professional (and a better person) for having had the opportunity to attend this wonderful internship. To that end, I am grateful to all who made this experience possible including, but not limited to, the Kearney recruitment team, the various mentors offered to us during the period, and the other 5 interns from whom I learnt a great deal.

    To Externs/Interns: Go through the experience, fully.I recently finished a consulting externship with PwC via Paragon One. The experience was quite fascinating, though hard at times. When asked what lessons I drew from the experience, I could only think of a process—one that also applies to life in general—that I would love to share:1. Know and understand the problem you have to solve clearly: this tells you what to look for.2. You’re supposed to be confused and overwhelmed at the start—it’s called the learning curve. Calm and clarity comes from doing the work.3. Get used to noise. For every 5-10 articles/sources you read, 1 will be really good and usable.4. As long as you’ve optimized for the problem you picked, you’ve done your job.5. If you made it as far as being asked this question, you did well. Be proud of yourself, you deserve to be.Hold yourself to a high standard, but remember that you are still learning. Don’t be hard on yourself at the start, evaluate the end.Also remember that there is power in community, I couldn't have done it without the amazing cohort that I was a part of.What has an internship or externship taught you?     Summer is around the corner and internships will kick off soon for many students. We recently held a panel session with former CPI and Public Sector interns to help welcome our new crew. Here is some of the advice they shared as well as other tips gleaned from experience:·Be present. Every interaction is an opportunity to make an impression. How you show up each moment with your attire, attitude, and work quality matters.·Be curious. Say yes to assignments and be open to opportunities that present themselves.·Be prepared. Do your research on the company before you start. Arrive with SMART goals in mind.·Be intentional with your outreach. Before meeting with colleagues prepare in advance with bio reviews and tailored questions. Spend time and be supportive of your fellow interns. Meet as many people as possible.·Be reflective. After seeking feedback in a thoughtful way that is mindful of colleagues’ time and roles, create an action plan to address opportunities and further develop strengths. Think critically about your compatibility with the company’s culture, the nature of the work and your anticipated responsibilities of a full-time role. ·Make an impact by not only doing the job that is asked of you but by going above and beyond to add value to the organization.
